Victoria 68 St. John's-Tipton 56

BELOIT -- The Victoria High School football team picked up a big win in Eight-Man Division II, District 7 action, taking out the team that beat the Knights in last season's playoff run, defeating Beloit/St. John's-Tipton, 68-56.

Brady Dinkel threw two touchdown passes and ran for four more, accounting for 281 yards of total offense, but the Knights were actually outgained 446-443 by the Bluejays, last year's Division II sub-state runner-up.

St. John's-Tipton's Trey Dubbert passed for 319 yards and five touchdowns with one interception.

Bryan Dome had six carries for 50 yards and a score, and returned a kickoff 66 yards to the house in the victory, the Knights' fifth straight since dropping the season opener to Claflin-Central Plains.

The Knights and Thunder Ridge --  an 84-58 winner against Northern Valley -- are 2-0 in district play. They face each other this week in Victoria.

Thunder Ridge has not lost since its season opener against undefeated Osborne. Trent Rietzke delivered a monster performance Friday in the win at Kensington. He carried the ball 40 times for 354 yards and six TDs, helping the Longhorns move to 2-0 in Division II, District 7 play. Dylan Bretton completed 6 of 14 passes for 68 yards with one TD and an interception.

Northern Valley has lost back-to-back games against district leaders Victoria and Thunder Ridge after starting the season 4-0. The Huskies were led by 130 yards rushing for Matt Stuttsman.

Northern Valley faces 2-4 Natoma this week. Natoma fell 56-8 at home to Otis-Bison on Friday.

ELLIS -- The Railers had a successful homecoming with their third win of the season to move to 1-1 in 2-1A, District 7 play. Senior Sean Lee had four catches from sophomore quarterback Easton Smith for 82 yards and three touchdowns. Smith finished 9 of 14 for 189 yards and four scores, the other going to junior tight end Brendan Brenner.

Senior running back Jared Pfeifer finished with 12 carries for 69 yards and a score, while Lee tacked on a rushing score to rack up four TDs for the game.

Ellis travels to Oakley in district action this week. Oakley is 3-3 after Friday's 33-0 win against MCL member TMP-Marian.

La Crosse didn't score until the second quarter, but managed a 21-0 lead by halftime, and led 28-0 before giving up a long touchdown run to Plainville sophomore Hayden Friend.

Making his second start at quarterback, the Leopards' Andrew Jay had 20 carries for 155 yards and a score. Senior fullback Sheldon Schmidt had 17 carries for 118 yards, while senior running back Jack Garcia -- the injured QB -- had 17 carries for 97 yards and scored twice. Jay also was 4-for-4 on extra-point attempts.

La Crosse won its second straight since suffering its first regular-season defeat in 39 games two weeks ago. La Crosse plays host to Smith Center (4-2) on Friday. Plainville takes travels to Leoti to face 1-5 Wichita County.

The defending Eight-Man Division I state champions rolled to 6-0 and 4-0 in District 4 play behind four passing touchdowns for quarterback Jake Tiernan. The junior was 7 of 10 passing for 172 yards, throwing two TDs to senior Brandt Wolters and one each to Cullen Grabast and Richard Zieters. Wolters caught three passes for 59 yards. The Bulldogs' run game had just 74 yards, with Zieters, Grabast and Tiernan each in the 20s. Grabast did rush for two TDs.

Osborne now has outscored its opponents 310-86, and has not given up a TD the last two outings. The Bulldogs take a break from district play to host eight-man newcomer St. Francis (3-3) on Friday.

Norton moved to 6-0 by putting up 14 first-quarter points. The Bluejays enter Class 3A, District 14 play having not given up more than a touchdown in any game in its 6-0 start. Norton has given up just 20 points and has three shutouts. Norton travels to 1-5 Russell to open district play this week.

Phillipsburg captured a win in a battle of two new teams to the Class 2-1A ranks. Stuart Lenneman helped the Panthers win their fourth straight contest since falling to Norton with five rushing touchdowns, racking up 224 rushing yards on scoring plays alone. Phillipsburg jumps back into 2-1A district play with a home game against 1-5 Republic County this week. Republic County fell 14-0 to Bennington on Friday.

A missed extra point proved to be the difference as Smith Center suffered just its second loss, but fell to 1-1 in Class 2-1A, District 6 play. The Redmen scored in the fourth quarter, and looked to tie things up after Ell-Saline had scored 14 points in the third quarter to take the lead, but missed the extra point attempt on the game's final score, which came with 9:26 to play in the game.

Brody Frieling had 19 rushing attempts for 79 yards, while Cale Rogers had 41 yards and a rushing TD. Thayne Benoit was 4 of 11 passing for 74 yards and the fourth-quarter TD toss for the Redmen.

Tabor Erickson had three catches for 40 yards and a score, and Keagen Blau had three catches for 85 yards and a score for Oberlin, which won its fourth straight. The Red Devils return to district action this week when they play host to Quinter (4-2) on Friday.

Tyler Waggoner had a big game for the Bulldogs, completing 9 of 13 passes for 315 yards and five touchdowns as Quinter won its second straight game to move to 2-2 in Eight-Man I, District 8 play. Waggoner found Brett Crist four times for 112 yards, Jonah Ruckman three times for 136 yards and Devontae Goldsby twice for 67 yards. He added five carries for 62 yards. Goldsby finished with 18 carries for 147 yards, and scored twice.

Riley Nyp collected 27 carries for 209 yards and scored three times for Logan-Palco, which suffered its third straight defeat after starting the season 3-0.

Quinter travels to Oberlin in district play this week, while Logan-Palco plays host to Atwood-Rawlins County in district action.

In Grinnell, Wallace County continued its stranglehold on Eight-Man Division II, District 8 by ending its game against Wheatland-Grinnell by halftime. Eric Gfeller completed 6 of 11 passes for 100 yards and three scores, while rushing eight times for 68 yards and a score as the Wildcats -- last year's Division II state runner-up --  stayed a head of Hoxie in the district standings. Luke Schemm added eight carries for 53 yards and two TDs. The Wildcats play their third straight road contest this week when they travel to Rexford-Golden Plains (0-5) in district action.
