LIBERAL — The Hays High School softball team finished its regular season in impressive fashion on Thursday, sweeping Liberal High School on the road by scores of 18-0 and 24-0. The games were originally scheduled for May 5 but postponed due to rain.
In the 18-0 Game 1 win, Hays High led 6-0 after half an inning and put the game away with 12 runs in the third inning. The game was called after the end of that inning because of the run rule.
Madison Prough (2-6) pitched all three innings for HHS, allowing two hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Kaylie Schoendaller led the offense with six runs batted in.
In Game 2, Hays High scored four runs in the first inning, six in the second, four in the third and 10 in the fourth to enforce the run rule again.
Starting pitcher Hope Aufdemberge (2-4) earned the win in 2.0 innings in the circle, allowing no hits and striking out two batters. Erika Arnhold pitched the final two innings, giving up three hits.
Hays High finishes the regular season 5-15 overall. The Indians will begin Class 4A Division I regional play at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Andale as the No. 3 seed, where they will play No. 2 seed McPherson High School (11-9). The winner will play in the 6 p.m. championship game against the winner of No. 1 seed Andale/Garden Plain (12-6) and No. 4 seed Buhler (1-19).
