Oscar Honas, 80, Ellis, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2017, at Trego County-Lemke Long Term Care, WaKeeney.
He was born May 27, 1936, in Ellis to Ed and Agnes (Steckline) Honas. He was a 1954 graduate of Ellis High School.
He married Betty (Gaschler) on May 9, 1955, in Ellis. He retired from Union Pacific Railroad, where he was a brakeman and conductor for 37 years. After his retirement, he worked for Fischer Liquor store in Ellis and the Ellis Recreation Commission.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Ellis.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman, enjoyed KU basketball and above all else he enjoyed being a husband, father and especially grandfather, attending his grandchildren’s activities.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Ellis; a son, Stan “Buck” Honas, Ellis, a daughter, Sandy Honas, Ellis; a brother, Art Honas, Ellis; a sister, Delores Schmeidler, Hays; his grandchildren, Molly Kohl and husband, Jamie, Cape Coral, Fla., Cody Honas and wife, Megan. WaKeeney, Devin Jacques and wife, Shelby and Brady Jacques, all of Ellis; and his great-grandchildren, Jamison and Jett Kohl, Cape Coral, Hunter, Breckyn and Brielle Honas, WaKeeney and Johanna Jacques, Ellis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Julie Hones; and his brothers and sisters, Joe, Rudy, Ernie, Frank, Clarence, Eddie, Irene, Glen; and two infant brothers, Edward and John.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Ellis; inurnment in the church cemetery.
A rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to be used according to the wishes of the family to be designated at a later date.
