Smith Center was the lone area school to bring home a trophy from Saturday's state scholars bowl competition.

Smith Center posted a 3-2 record in the finals at the Class 2A state meet in Moundridge, good enough for third place.

Norton and Ransom-Western Plains also made the finals of their respective state meets.

Norton won the fourth-place medals in 3A competition at Douglass, while Western Plains finished one spot out of earning any hardware with its fifth-place finish at the Class 1A, Division II tournament at Rolla.

Thomas More Prep-Marian High School also competed in the 3A meet along with Norton but fell one victory short of making the finals with its 2-3 pool-play record. The Monarchs finished the season with a 61-13 overall record, the first time TMP recorded more than 60 victories since the school's 2011 state title team.

Russell, last year's top area finisher with its runner-up state finish in 3A, didn't fare as well in 4A this year, failing to make the finals in its state meet at De Soto.
