WELLINGTON -- Another night, another late-inning surge for the Hays Larks.
In control of the Jayhawk League early, the Larks won their 10th straight Sunday night, 13-2, to complete a three-game sweep of the Wellington Heat.
Hays (13-1 overall, 9-1 JL) scored six runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to pull away. The game was 3-2 heading into the seventh.
Newcomer Colin Hightower made his Larks debut in the start. He pitched six strong innings to pick up the win. Hightower gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits with three walks and a two strikeouts.
The Larks' offense got a big boost in the eight on a three-RBI home run for first baseman Cody Daily, who finished 2 for 5 with four RBIs and a run scored.
Zair Koeiman also had a big game. He went 4 for 4 with five RBIs and two runs scored. He had a two-run single in the first inning to put Hays on top, then had a two-run single in the eighth.
Mackenzie Handel was 3 for 5 with two runs scored and Aaron Cornell finished 2 for 6 with an RBI. Making his first start of the summer, Brett Lang caught for the Larks. Lang played last season, but made his first appearance.
Wellington (9-5, 5-5) was sitting in second entering the weekend, but dropped to third in the league after the sweep.
Hays has two games at home this week. The Larks host Liberal on Tuesday and Wednesday, then travel to Derby for a three-game series this weekend. In other Jayhawk League action Sunday, Derby defeated Dodge City 8-1 in a game called after the eighth inning due to weather. El Dorado bumped into second place in the league with a 9-8 win against Liberal.
