GREAT BEND — Class 6A powerhouse Garden City was the only team to top the Hays High School cross country teams on a steamy Tuesday in Great Bend.
Both Indians teams finished second to the Buffaloes and had three medalists in their season-opening run.
Garden City edged out the Indians atop the boys standings with 42 points to Hays High’s 59.
Zachary Hopp and Ethan Shippy crossed in fifth and seventh place, respectively, for Hays High. Hopp finished in 17 minutes, 46 seconds, while Shippy crossed the finish line in 18:33.
Daniel Lopez was the third Indian runner, finishing in 18:50, and earning a medal for 11th place.
Caden Cunningham and Ross Hatten rounded out the team scoring for Hays High. The team’s final two runners traversed the 3.1 miles in less than 20 minutes.
On the girls’ side, Garden City showed its talent, finishing with 36 points. Hays High finished second with 62 points. The Indians’ top finishers on the girls’ side placed fifth and sixth.
Senior Marie Reveles captured the Indians’ second fifth-place medal, finishing her first race of the season in 17:56.
Freshman Ady Albers put together an impressive prep debut with her time of 18:34 and finished sixth.
Haley George also medaled as the 11th finisher in 18:57, while Alyssa Bryant and Marina Friedel occupied the last two spots.
