GOODLAND — The Hays High School softball team fell to 0-4 on the season after losing two games at Goodland High School on Thursday, 6-3 and 7-6.
The Indians led 2-0 after an inning in Game 1, a RBI-triple by Albany Schaffer and RBI-single by Kaylie Schoendaller doing the work. The Cowgirls answered with four runs in the second inning to take a lead they would never relinquish. HHS added one more run in the top of the fourth to get within one, but Goodland added runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth to secure the win.
Madison Prough pitched all 6.0 innings for HHS, only one of the six runs allowed being earned in the loss.
Hays High jumped out to another 2-0 lead in Game 2, which grew to 4-0 midway through the third inning on a two-run home run by Schoendaller. The Cowgirls put a run on the board in the bottom of the third and took the lead with a four-run fifth inning, adding two more in the sixth.
HHS rallied with two runs in the seventh but ran out of real estate, stranding the tying run on second base.
Erika Arnold took the Game 2 loss for Hays High, pitching all 6.0 innings with eight strikeouts.
Hays High next competes Tuesday in a triangular at Valley Center.
