The Hoxie High School girls' basketball team, winner of four straight state Class 1A Division I state championships and a state-record 95 straight contests during a span of four seasons, earned more recognition Monday.

During a contest that lasted about one month, the Indians were voted the best girls' basketball program in the nation as part of USA Today High School Sports' "best-of" series.

Hoxie finished with 210,934 votes, edging Friendship Capitol of Baton Rouge, La. (134,456) in the voting.

The award comes with $1,000 for Hoxie High's athletic budget, a ceremony at the school, and a championship banner to hang in the school.
