Verna J. (Janzen) Wiens, 93, Colby, died Thursday, April 21, 2016, at Citizens Medical Center in Colby.
She was born Aug. 5, 1922, in rural Texas County, Okla., to Barney and Agnus (Wiebe) Janzen. She was a 1952 graduate of Adams High School.
She married George Wiens on Oct. 7, 1943. in Texas County. He preceded her in death. In March 1947, they moved to northwest Kansas. In December 1974, they moved to their own farm located on U.S. Highway 25. During her lifetime, she saw great change in the methods of farming, from dryland to irrigation. She enjoyed her role of bookkeeping for W&W Farms, Inc., and being involved in numerous community activities, clubs, and church activities.
She was skilled at sewing, first. Later her sewing skills were used for making quilts. She had a large Hummel collection, enjoyed her Fostoria and tending to her flower gardens and spending time with her four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters, Georgetta Schoenfeld and husband, Robert, and Berna Towl and husband, Larry, all of Colby; two brothers, Harold Jansen and wife, Helen, Alva, Okla., and Chester Janzen and wife, Marlece, Topeka; a sister, Hilda Janzen, Kolblenz, Germany; four grandchildren, Tracy Johnson and wife, Terry, Travis Towns and wife, Carrie, Jayson Schoenfeld and wife, Jen, and Krista Carter and husband, Ryan; and seven great-grandchildren, Taylor and Tanner Johnson, Jaysie, Jenson and Jera Schoenfeld and Kenzie and Ryler Carter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Walter Janzen.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Colby United Methodist Church; burial in the Summers Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby.
