Barbara S. (Brin) Benoit Balthazor, 83, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2015, at Hays Good Samaritan Center.
She was born March 20, 1932, in Damar to Oliver and Mary (Morin) Brin. She was a graduate of Damar High School. Later she received a teaching certificate from Marymount College, then graduated from Fort Hays State College with a bachelor’s degree where she received her 50-year alumni certificate.
She married Gilbert Vernon Benoit on Aug. 25, 1953, in Damar. He preceded her in death Feb. 26, 1977. She later married Phillip Paul Balthazor in 1979. He preceded her in death July 6, 1992.
She taught school for 27 years, starting in West Plainville, Webster and then Damar, USD No. 269, before retiring.
She enjoyed her friends, family, neighbors, community and students. She devoted many hours of work helping to organize, edit, print and publish the book “Centennial Highlights and History of Damar, Kansas: Celebrating 100 Years, 1888 to 1988.” She enjoyed dancing, mission trips, making pilgrimages and taking cruises.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Damar, the Ladies of St. Ann’s and a CCD teacher.
Survivors include her companion and best friend of 23 years, Norman Fisher, Hays; a son, Tim Benoit and wife, Brenda, Damar; a daughter, Treva Benoit and husband, Kerry McCue, Hays; three stepsons, Terry Balthazor and wife, Kay, Columbia, Mo., Greg Balthazor and wife, Karla, Stockton, and Pat Balthazor; a stepdaughter, Paula Balthazor, Gold Canyon, Ariz.; four sisters, Annette Benoit and Patricia Ficken, both of Damar, Iona Knipp, Hill City, and Sister Diane Brin, Rome, Ga; three grandchildren, Bryn Benoit, Alex Benoit and Jena Ernsting; 11 step-grandchildren; and 16 step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Clearance, Levi and Frank Brin; two sisters, Rita Newell and Marida Newell; and a son, Terry Benoit.
Services were Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Damar; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.
