MIDWEST CITY, Okla. -- The Hays Eagles Senior Legion baseball team improved to 2-0 at the South Plains Classic, held in the Oklahoma City suburb of Midwest City at Rose State College, by defeating Edmond Realtree on Thursday, 10-4.
Cole Schumacher (5-0) earned the complete-game (7 inn.) win for Hays, allowing five hits and five walks to go with four strikeouts.
The teams were scoreless entering the bottom of the second inning, when a RBI single by Jared Haynes scored Kade Parker. A second run was added when Layne Downing scored from third after a Realtree throwing error.
Hays took a 2-1 lead into the top of the fourth inning before allowing three Edmond runs, giving Team Realtree a 4-2 lead. But the Eagles responded with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth, a two-RBI double by Connor Rule highlighting the inning.
The score remained 6-4 in favor of Hays until the Eagles added four more runs to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning and Edmond went down in order in the top half of the seventh to end the game.
Parker finished 3 for 3 at the plate with two runs and one RBI. Rule and Haynes each finished with a team-high two RBI, going 2 for 3. Hays outhit Edmond 13 to five.
The win came after Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Wichita Sluggers to open pool play in Oklahoma, Marcus Altman (2-1) earning the win for the Eagles.
Parker also earned the first save of the season for Hays, finishing the final 1.2 innings. Downing was responsible for a team best three RBI against Wichita.
Hays, now 13-5, will continue pool play today in Oklahoma with two more games. The first is against Tuttle (Okla.) at 12:15 p.m., the second against the Oklahoma Outlaws at 4:45 p.m. Tournament play begins Saturday and concludes with Sunday's championship game.
