On Sunday evening, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a small suspicious box with a timing device attached in northwest Ellis County.

A deputy responded to the scene approximately 11 miles northwest of Hays to meet with the landowner who called it in, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

The box was located approximately 25 yards north of an oil well pump jack, the release said. After photos of the box taken by the landowner were looked at, the Fort Riley bomb squad was called. The deputy was advised to not approach the box and to set up a perimeter, keeping everyone away from the immediate area. The bomb squad from Fort Riley was dispatched to the area, arriving on the scene at approximately 1 a.m.

By 3 a.m., the squad cleared the scene using a robot for a controlled detonation of the box. It was determined to not be an explosive device according to the release. The incident is still under investigation by the sheriff’s department.

The office also is asking the public to call 911 if they come across any other suspicious articles or packages that have been placed or abandoned in the area.
