HAYSVILLE — With a chance to get back to .500 on the early season and get their first series win in the Jayhawk League, the Hays Larks clicked on the mound and at the plate en route to an 8-2 Thursday night win in Haysville.

The Larks’ bats were hot from the get-go, as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. With two runners in scoring position, Evan Gruener hit a two-RBI triple. Gruener then scored on a Jake Campbell single, with Allan Beer knocking in Campbell on a single of his own as Hays batted around in the first inning.

The Larks added three runs in the fifth inning, scoring two runs on singles and capitalizing on an error by Haysville to end the three-run fifth up 7-2.

Cam Roegner allowed just two runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings of work.

Campbell added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, scoring on a Beer groundout to extend the lead to the final score of 8-2.

Campbell crossed the plate three times for Hays and batted in one runner on his way to a 3 for 5 game.

The Larks’ relievers threw three hitless innings for Hays, allowing just one base runner on a walk.

The victory gives Hays the series win as they return to Larks Park for a three-game set with Bethany (Okla.) beginning Friday. Hays improved to 6-6 overall with a 3-4 record in Jayhawk League play.
