HUTCHINSON -- The Hays High School boys' swim team took third out of seven teams at a meet on Tuesday, held in Hutchinson but hosted by Great Bend High School.
Senior Morgan Mathews took first place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.82 seconds, an event he is already state qualified for. Mathews also took first in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.01 seconds to earn state qualification. He qualified for state in the 100-yard butterfly in the season-opening meet in Salina, an event he did not compete in Tuesday.
Other notable finishers were Ben Rajewski, who took third in the 500-yard freestyle in 6 minutes, 28.75 seconds and third in the 200-yard IM in 2:36.09, Ben Morley's fourth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:15.04, and a pair of fourth-place finishes from both the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams (2:02.27 and 1:48.91, respectively).
The 400-yard freestyle relay team took fifth in 4:49.99.
The Indians, which competed in three meets in six days to open the season, are off until Dec. 17 when they travel to Manhattan, their final meet before the holiday break.
