The Hays Larks are 2-1 after winning their season-opening series against the Colorado Sox during the weekend at Larks Park.
Hays capped the series Sunday night with a 4-3 win against the visiting Sox after splitting Saturday night’s doubleheader. Hays lost Game 1, 4-3, then won 6-0 in the nightcap.
In Sunday’s game, Hays had to rally from a 2-0 deficit, and eventually led 3-2, but the Sox tied things up in the top of the seventh, before the Larks plated the winning run in the bottom half for the narrow win.
The Larks are back in non-league action today and Tuesday against the Denver Cougars. Game time both nights is 7 p.m.
Derek Birginske picked up Sunday’s win. He pitched seven innings. He gave up three runs (all earned) on four hits while striking out five and walking one. Nate Fisher picked up the save in two perfect innings with three strikeouts.
Michael Burns was 3 for 4, including a game-tying home run in the bottom of the third. He drove in two runs. Brett Anderson also collected three hits, scored twice and drove in a run.
In Saturday’s loss, Jake Wilcox took the loss in two-thirds of an inning for Hays. Starter Nick Goza pitched 5.1 innings, giving up eight hits with six strikeouts.
In Saturday’s win for Hays, Brandon Bell pitched five innings for the win. He struck out 10 in the scoreless effort, allowing just two hits.
