Its conference slate has not been kind thus far to the Fort Hays State University tennis team.
In five tries in the MIAA, the Tigers have yet to win a match, and have not had more than two wins in any outing.
That trend continued Thursday against one of the best teams the conference has to offer in No. 19 ranked Southwest Baptist (Mo.) University at the FHSU courts.
The Bearcats won 7-2, with the Tigers’ only two wins coming via forfeit for Southwest Baptist.
Led by Fanni Varga, the No. 20 ranked player in the nation and the No. 1 ranked player in the region, Baptist won all seven matches on the court in near-dominant fashion.
At No. 1 doubles Camille Caron-Bedard and Michele Miller fell 8-0 against Lani Tuemmers and Maria Josie Zehnder, the No. 10 ranked team in the region. Brittney Ricci and Katie Hipp fell 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, while Jessica Johnson and Raven Dick picked up one of the Tigers’ forfeit wins at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, no Tiger earned more than two sets. Caron-Bedard fell, 6-1, 6-0 to Varga, then Zehnder blanked Ricci at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0.
Tuemmers defeated Miller at No. 3, 6-0, 6-2. At No. 4, Beatrix Federer defeated Hipp, 6-2, 6-1, and finally at No. 5, Javonovic defeated Johnson, 6-0, 6-2.
FHSU (7-7 overall, 0-5 MIAA) will play host to Lincoln at 10 a.m. Saturday in MIAA action at the FHSU courts.
