Thomas More Prep-Marian senior Andrew Hess made it two close misses for the Monarch distance runners at the state meet on Saturday in Wichita.
Moments after Melissa Pfeifer was edged in the girls’ 3,200 race, Hess placed second in his race in 10:10.52, .02 seconds behind Scott Community freshman Jack Thomas in the same event.
Despite nearly catching Thomas down the home stretch, the result wasn’t too painful for the Monarch senior.
“I don’t mind it,” Hess said. “It was a good race.”
Thomas held on as Hess pressed down the final stretch, running a 1:05.58 in his final 400 meters.
“I just tried hanging on as long as I could,” Hess said. “At the last kick, it was between me and the Scott City kid, and he got me by a little bit.”
Hess added two points to the TMP total with a seventh-place finish in the 1,600, finishing in 4:51.2. His first lap of 1:08.45 was his fastest in the event.
Ethan Lang, Hayden Lowe and Trevor Pfeifer joined the TMP senior on the TMP 3,200 relay team that placed 12th in 8:57.76.
Lowe represented TMP in its only other event, the high jump. The Monarch junior finished right outside the points, placing ninth with a height of 5-10. He cleared the height on his second attempt but was unable to clear 6-0.
The Monarchs finished with 10 team points.
