Visiting Colorado Christian University picked up a 12-7 victory against the Fort Hays State University baseball team Sunday at Larks Park, snapping the Tigers’ six-game winning streak and salvaging the final game of the series.
The Tigers got 14 hits in Sunday’s series finale, but mustered just seven runs through the first three innings to pull to within 8-7 after the Cougars’ hot start.
CCU scored seven runs in the first and one in the second, and never trailed. The Cougars sent 11 batters to the plate in the first, scoring six runs (four earned) off FHSU starter Justin Hersch (0-1).
FHSU scored its first run in the first inning when Nick Hammeke flew out to right, scoring Ty Redington. Trevor Hughes hit a home run to score Jake Lanferman as part of the Tigers’ three-run third, but FHSU was scoreless after that.
The loss drops the Tigers to 6-4, while CCU improved to 4-7.
Hammeke, Hughes, Dayton Pomeroy, Clayton Basgall and Jason Nicholson each collected two hits. Hammeke had a triple.
The Tigers head to Warrensburg, Mo., for a three-game set to open MIAA play at University of Central Missouri. The first game is slated for 2 p.m. Friday.
