Gays and lesbians must be treated with respect. Homosexuality is a fact of life, and it must be accepted. But for many, respect for the condition does not include a sexual lifestyle. Others said same-sex marriage hurts no one. Even an ex-president said he thinks Jesus would approve of same-sex marriage. Many seem not to know, or care about, their religion’s position on same-sex relationships.

Consequently, considering only 1 percent to 2 percent of the population are exclusively homosexual, they have accomplished much in gaining public acceptance of their sexual lifestyle.

God created a family composed of a man and a woman, not two men or two women. The King James Biblical version of Leviticus 20:13 is: “If a man also lieth with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.” And in Genesis 9:7, “And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply ... ”, impossible with same sex coupling. God destroyed cities like Sodom. “Islam regards physical intimacy as an act of responsibility between a man and a woman within the confines of contractual marriage.” (“Islam and Muslims: Same sex Marriages” by Dr. Aslam Abdullah, May 13, 2012). For Catholics, the traditional marriage is a sacrament. The legitimization of same-sex marriage brings the aberrant lifestyle into society, contradicting religious tenets, making it appropriate subject matter for public school teaching and creating more divisiveness. If same-sex marriage is constitutional, then it appears to be constitutional for polygamy and incestuous relationships. Where will it end?

There are orphanages, single-parent families, families whose parents have been wedded and divorced multiple times, same-sex families, foster parents and in parts of the world, polygamy, and in all of them children can be raised. But children, the future of mankind, are begotten through heterosexual relationships, and the best environment for raising children who need a mom and a dad is the traditional family. Men and women serve as separate role models in the nurture of children. Children should know and relate with their biological parents and relatives.

The traditional marriage, being most conducive to a healthy society and conforming with religious doctrine, should have been protected. But with continued moral laxity, successful attacks on religion will continue. J.D. Anwin at Cambridge University published “Sex and Culture” in 1934 on studies of 86 societies. He found that after a nation becomes prosperous, it becomes increasingly liberal with regard to sexual morality and as a result loses its cohesion, its impetus and its purpose in an irreversible process. We haven’t learned from the past and therefore, we are repeating it.
