Inspired to be her own boss, local cosmetologist opens B. Yourself salon in downtown Hays

After graduating from Hays Academy, she knew she wanted to make it big in the cosmetology world.

From salons throughout Kansas City and Florida, Beatrice Adame has opened the salon of her dreams, right where she always felt she belonged.

B. Yourself salon has opened for business in downtown Hays.

“I’ve had these huge dreams for myself to work in major cities and be ‘miss big time’, so moving to Florida was definitely one of those dreams,” Adame said. “I had an opportunity in NYC that thankfully didn’t work out, it took me leaving to realize I had everything I ever wanted back in Hays.”

From an early age, Adame felt drawn to the world of beauty-practicing makeup and hairstyles on herself and friends, including styling her first clients for high school prom.

The 22 year old got her start as a student at Hays Academy of Hair Design, where she graduated at 19.

Graduation from HAHD requires students to complete their book- a set of hair stylings, colors and cuts.

Mornings were the most challenging aspect of work for Adame. With early morning starts, the academy would often start with a prayer, followed by activities to get everyone warmed up for the day.

The day would begin with classes for students in training. Students who began working would start on the floor with clients throughout the day.

“Being on the floor was of course my favorite part- I am a hands-on learner and thankfully I was busy most of the time,” Adame shared.

On Saturdays, Adame was often given the opportunity to work on clients on her own.

“I felt like they trusted me enough to work on my client by myself and it made my confidence better and I felt like I learned more doing it on my own,” Adame added.

Following her graduation, Adame began working in Kansas City before making a big move to Florida. The Sunshine State gave Adame dozens of clients, allowing her to find herself. In a short amount of time, Adame was able to take that experience and return back to Hays.

Though she left the big city behind, she carried on her big dreams. Adame bought Hair Repair and has since been making changes to the salon to fit her personality.

B. Yourself is a work in progress- but Adame sees the potential and feels that’s what sets them apart from other salons.

“Everything in life is a work in progress, B. Yourself is a historic building and needs a lot of loving, but I look at the salon like I look at myself as a stylist,” Adame said. “It took hard work, tears, sweat to get to where I am and I know how successful this salon will be.”

Adame has started taking clients- two, four, eight a day, depending on the services. B. Yourself currently has three stylists working alongside Adame including Gabbie Zimmerman, Brianna McLaughlin and Tracy Hemphill.

B. Yourself offers hand tied extensions, colors, balayage, eyelash extensions, acrylics, dip sets, pedicures and waxing services.

The support of her parents along with the ever-evolving influence of social media have contributed immensely to Adame’s success.

“My parents, they’re the ones who pushed me to be my own boss, I worked hard to make them proud and myself as well,” Adame said.

Online, Adame has been able to keep up with new trends, tips and techniques to further her education as a cosmetologist.

“As crazy as it sounds, hair gurus post a ton on how they do certain colors, different techniques and formulas, I would sit there for hours watching them and putting that to practice on mannequins or friends,” Adame added.

With big aspirations, Adame traveled the country, and found herself back where she felt like home. She is building the salon of her dreams and is excited for the future.

“I think I’m appreciating everything more just seeing it slowly come together. The salon definitely wouldn’t be where it is without the help of my family and I am truly thankful for them,” Adame said. “ It’s a work of art and I’m just so excited to see it when I finally have it the way I want.”
