Fort Hays State junior midfielder Anthony Hernandez continued his run of strong play, winning Friday’s game against Newman with a golden goal in the 102nd minute.

Mauricio Castornio set Hernandez up after receiving a pass from a defender with his back to goal. The sophomore forward beat one man on the turn, carried the ball upfield and slotted a well-timed through ball to Hernandez who beat the keep with a low shot to the far post. The win moved the No. 11 Tigers to 6-1-0 before Sunday’s home game against Texas A&M-International.

Castorino, the leading scorer in MIAA, put the Tigers in a position to play extra time with his equalizer in the 28th minute. After Pedro Augusto put the Jets ahead with a goal in the 23rd minute, Castorino took a free kick and beat the Newman keeper to the near post.

The Tigers narrowly outshot the Jets 14-13, while FHSU goalkeeper Michael Yantz made six saves.
