Richard “Dick” Riggs, 70, Hays, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016, at Saint Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City, Mo.
He was born July 6, 1945, in Hays, to Donald and Loree (Maddy) Riggs. He was a 1963 graduate of Hays High School and attended Fort Hays State University. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran during the Vietnam War.
He married Terri Herbig in 1970 in Hays. He worked in the tire industry, first at Riggs Tire and later in sales at Becker Tire until his retirement this past October.
He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid Jayhawks and Kansas City Royals and Chiefs fan. He enjoyed his family, friends and enjoyed his grandsons and going to their activities and sporting events. He enjoyed softball, hunting and cooking and courageously battled cancer for 11 years without complaint.
Survivors include his wife, of the home in Hays; a son, Cory Riggs and wife, Tina, and their children, Trey, Derrik, and Kyler Riggs, all of Hays; a daughter, Kelly Riggs, Kansas City, Kan.; his mother, Hays; a sister, Linda O’Conner, Hays; his mother-in-law, Marcelyn Herbig, Hays; and three brothers-in-law, Mark Herbig, Hays, Alan Hayes, Green River, Wyo., and John Medina, Trinidad, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father; a twin sister, Donna Medina; his father-in-law, Heinie Herbig; and a sister-in-law, Sandy Hayes.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine, Hays, KS 67601., following with military honors by Hays VFW Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9:30 am until service time Tuesday, both at the funeral home.
Memorials are to be decided at a later date in care of the funeral home.
