GREAT BEND -- The Hays High School cross country team opened its season with a meet at Great Bend on Thursday, taking third on the girls' side and fifth on the boys'.
The Indians only had five varsity girl runners compete, with three of them medaling. Hays High was led by sophomore Marie Reveles, who took fifth overall with a time of 17 minutes, 16 seconds. Junior Haley George took 13th in 18:24, and senior Summer Smith 15th in 18:32. Alyssa Bryant finished just outside of medaling, taking 18th in 18:49.
The girls' team finished with 84 points, falling short of first-place Ellinwood (55 points) and second-place Liberal (63 points).
The boys' team had one medalist, sophomore Zachary Hopp. He took 10th with a time of 18:30. Ethan Shippy was the next best Indian runner, taking 19th in 18:47.
Garden City took first on the boys' side with 31 points, followed by Liberal and Great Bend with 70 each. Salina South was fourth with 110 points, and Hays High fifth with 115 points. Hutchinson (128 points) and Holcomb (157 points) rounded out the teams.
The Indians next compete at Hesston on Thursday.
