The Fort Hays State University men’s soccer team improved to 3-1 with a 2-1 victory over CSU-Pueblo on Sunday afternoon.
The 14th-ranked Tigers earned a victory over the 12th-ranked ThunderWolves after falling behind early.
Matt Marchena beat Tigers’ goalie Michael Yantz in the sixth minutes, but CSU-Pueblo’s lead didn’t last long.
In the 18th minute, Mauricio Castorino contested a long ball from Yantz that took a big bounce towards the ThunderWolves’ goal. After a CSU-Pueblo defender headed it closer to goal, Castorino continued his run and volleyed the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net.
The Tigers settled for a tie after the first 45 minutes.
Tomiwa Olaniran scored the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute off an assist from Castorino. The goal marked the first time Olaniran, a redshirt freshman from Tulsa, Okla., found the back of the net in an FHSU uniform.
The Tigers outshot the ThunderWolves 13-11, but Yantz only needed to make one save during the afternoon.
The Tigers host Lubbock Christian at 7 p.m. Saturday. It will be the men’s first regular season game at FHSU Soccer Stadium this fall.
