In 2006, the legislature created the Abuse, Neglect, Exploitation Unit in the attorney general's office.
The goal was to increase accountability in how state agencies and law enforcement address cases of abuse, neglect and exploitation.
The ANE unit receives notice of all cases of abuse, neglect, and exploitation investigated and confirmed by Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, Kansas Department of Aging, and Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
Of the 1,785 reports of Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of children and vulnerable adults received by the ANE unit in 2007:
* 80 percent of the reports are of child abuse.
* 20 percent of adult abuse
* Almost half of all adult abuse cases reported involved financial exploitation.
SRS and Kansas Department of Aging reported 184 confirmed cases of financial exploitation or fiduciary abuse of vulnerable adults.
