SALINA — A pair from the Hays High School track and field team took gold medals Friday at the Salina Central Invitational.
Indian senior Shane Berens won the discus for the Hays High boys with a throw of 159 feet, 3 inches, then added a silver medal in the shot put with a throw of 54-7, just an inch-and-a-half behind Buhler junior Bredan Webb in the event.
For the Indian girls, freshman Tasiah Nunnery captured a gold medal in the long jump. Nunnery jumped 16-11.5, tying for the top distance in the event.
The Indian girls — with 45 points — ended up sixth in the 10-team field.
Hays High also grabbed a pair of second-place finishes ont the girls’ side. Jaycee Dale was second in the high jump, clearing 5-0. The winner, Ayi-lissa Dotson, Junction City, cleared 5-5.
Hays High’s Brooke Pflaum also tied for second int he pole vault, clearing 8-6. The winning vault of 9-0 belonged to Salina Central’s Georgia Bell.
Marie Reveles collected a bronze medal for the Indian girls in the 1,600-meter run. Reveles finished in 5 minutes, 39.62 seconds, just five second behind the winner, Karen Razo of Great Bend.
Reveles added a sixth-place showing in the 800.
Hays High is off until Thursday when it travels to Dodge City for the WAC meet.
