The Hays High volleyball team picked up five wins at the Newton Invite on Saturday, but also lost its perfect record.

The Indians entered the tournament 8-0 and moved to 13-0 before losing to the Railroaders at the end of the day.

Hays High took the first set 25-21 before Newton took the next two sets 25-16 and 25-22.

Tessa Stickel led the team with 13 kills in the loss, and Madison Prough dished out 16 assists.

Christin Nunneryís team opened the day with a convincing 25-13, 25-13 sweep of Salina South. Kylie Brown had five blocks in the opener.

Andover Central was the Indiansí second victim, as Hays High won 25-14, 25-21 behind seven kills from Audra Schmeidler.

Topeka Highland Park only managed 22 points across two sets in another sweep for the Indians. Prough recorded 13 assists against the Scots.

Schaffer recorded 21 digs and three service aces in a sweep of Wichita Heights in the Indiansí fourth match.

Hays Highís final win of the day came against Goddard Eisenhower. The Indians dropped the first set 25-19 but won set two 25-23 and set three 25-22. Taylor Groen-Younger led the team with 15 assists across three sets.

Monarchs take second place with 4-1 showing in Hoisington

Central Plains, the top-ranked team in Class 2A, prevented a perfect Saturday for the Thomas More Prep-Marian volleyball team at the Hoisington Invite.

The Monarchs swept the hosts 31-29, 25-13 and Phillipsburg 25-13, 25-19 before facing the undefeated Oilers.

TMP dropped the first set 25-18 and the second 25-20 in the teamís only loss on the day.

Natausha Dreherís squad got back in the win column against St. John and Smith Center.

The Monarchs needed three sets to get past the Tigers and swept Smith Center.

Kayla Vitztum led the squad in kills and aces with 34 and 12, respectively, while Melissa Pfeifer recorded 17 blocks.

TMP will take a 20-3 record into its next match tonight in Victoria.
