WICHITA — The Thomas More Prep-Marian girls’ soccer team won its second game in as many days when it defeated Wichita’s Classical School 7-0 on Friday in Wichita.
The Monarchs were never threatened against the Saints, a relatively new program, and led 6-0 at halftime. Sophomore Megan Koenigsman scored the first goal less than two minutes into the first half, junior Annaka Applequist scoring two of the next three goals, the other coming from junior Bailey Hageman in the 29th minute.
Leading 4-0, freshman Ashley Ostrander made it 5-0 with her goal in the 36th minute and right before halftime freshman Aubrey Koenigsman made it 6-0.
TMP coach Darryl Wellbrock said the Monarchs spent most of the second half playing with different personnel and formations, the only goal after the break coming from freshman Kayla Vitztum in the 58th minute.
Sophomore goalie Deonna Wellbrock combined with Ostrander for the shutout in net, although the Saints were held to a lone free kick attempt with no shots on goal in regular play.
TMP (2-0) will be back in Wichita on Monday when it plays defending Class 4-3-2-1A state champion Trinity. The Monarchs had their season end a year ago in a 2-0 loss to Trinity in the state quarterfinals.
