Can you believe it is just about the end of summer? If your kids are anything like mine, the battle cries of, “We are bored!” and “What are we doing today?” have started to fill the time between waking up and finishing my first cup of coffee.

Drinking water is not the cause of diarrhea while traveling

DEAR DR. ROACH: While reading one of your recent columns, I learned that all water, except distilled, contains electrolytes. I wondered if there are differences in the amount of each electrolyte in drinking water in different places in Canada, and if so, whether that might explain why I experience cramping and diarrhea when I am visiting another place? Through experience, I have been able to avoid the problem by drinking only bottled mineral or distilled water when I am away from my home. In cases where I have been on lengthier holidays, after I lived through the initial distress, eventually, my gastric system calmed down and seemed to accommodate the new source of water. I felt that my malady might be some sort of domestic version of Montezuma’s Revenge, but the analogy is inapt because the water I have consumed away from my home was not contaminated. -- M.T.

Women’s Alzheimer’s risk; who should take supplements

Q: Why don’t I know any men my age (76) who have Alzheimer’s, but I have four women friends who have developed it? What can I do to avoid joining them? -- Joyce R., Milwaukee A: Women make up nearly two-thirds of all Alzheimer’s cases in the U.S., but according to a survey done by the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement at the Cleveland Clinic, 82% of women aren’t aware of their increased risk. In addition, 73% of women have never discussed their brain health with their doctor, and 62% haven’t talked about menopause or perimenopause -- and that matters because research indicates it’s smart to monitor times of hormonal fluctuation to reduce the risk for Alzheimer’s.

A complement to patient care

As a clinical professor at my state’s medical school, I frequently have medical students seeing patients with me in clinic. While the majority of patients are happy to allow student involvement, some decline. This makes me wonder what misconceptions lead patients to be averse to trainees participating at their clinic visits or hospital bedsides. In my experience, the presence of learners has a positive influence on our work in the clinic and hospital.
