Heartland Foundation supports DSNWK training
Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas is proud to announce a grant award from the Heartland Community Foundation in the amount of $2,929.94. The grant will go toward the purchase of manikins and training supplies for the benefit and safety of individuals served by DSNWK in the Hays area.
4 Outside Agencies make 2025 Budget Requests Presentations to City
Representatives from Fort Hays State University (FHSU), Grow Hays, the Downtown Hays Development Corporation (DHDC) and the CARE Council made their organizations 2025 Budget Requests at the June 20, 2024 City of Hays Commission Work Session.
2025 County Commission Budget changes under consideration
During the June 18, 2024 Ellis County Commission meeting, County Administrator Darin Myers presented the 2025 budget for the commission’s department for review with proposed changes to the Rural Opportunity Zone (ROZ) and scholarship lines as well an update to place Commissioners on the same pay scale as all employees, based on the closest pay rate for the current salary.
22.6% Jump in renewal rates for City Property/Liability Coverage
Hays City Commissioners learned during the June 20, 2024 Work Session that the lowest cost option for the City’s Property/Liability Coverage, due for renewal 7/1/2024, is coverage from Midwest Public Risk (MPR) at a rate of $454,221, an increase of 22.6% ($83,720) compared to last year.

An inspired Break in morning routine
Among the infamous round-abouts that welcome guests into small town Kansas, a new dining experience has opened, hoping to provide more than just a meal, but an experience. Managing partners Gary Weatherbee and Chuck Comeau held a soft opening for Breaks Eatery & Bar this week, allowing invited guests to explore breakfast through their modern approach. A patio, breakfast bar and menu feature classics as well as new tastes in dishes including their favorite, the Dutch Baby. Weatherbee and Comeau helped usher out the era of Whiskey Creek, a staple in Hays, while welcoming in a fresh and exciting take on the first meal of the day.
Wage & Salary Increases, Collective Bargaining Agreement approved by USD489 BOE
The USD489 Board of Education (BOE) recessed into Executive Session during the June 17, 2024 meeting for approximately an hour and twenty minutes to discuss negotiations before unanimously approving wage and salary increases as well the District’s 2024-2025 Master Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Too much water IS possible
At the City of Hays June 18, 2024 Press Briefing, Water Conservation Specialist Holly Dickman acknowledged that plants may need additional moisture to survive current hot, dry and windy conditions. But she quickly added that too much irrigation is NOT a good thing.
