FHSU alumnus Glenn Tucker gives back to rural biology students

Growing up in a rural community, 1970 Fort Hays State University alumnus Dr. Glenn Tucker recognized the importance of lending a hand. From the small rural Kansas township of Ogallah, with a current population of 83, Tucker understood the challenges young adults from small communities face when considering their futures. Before passing, Tucker included FHSU in his estate plan to assist future generations of biology students from rural Kansas.

Safe mobility is the driving factor in Older Drivers Safety Awareness Week

Keeping older adults active in their communities and maintaining safe transportation are the goals of Older Driver Safety Awareness Week, which is Dec. 5-9. Normal activity such as shopping, working, volunteering and socializing should not become safety limitations or strand seniors at home, according to the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

New Mural Honors Czech Immigrants and the Railroad in Rural Kansas

Unveiling and Dedication of art to showcase historical growth of Wilson on December 17th from 1-3pm at the Midland Railroad Hotel Barn Wilson, KS. The Wilson Tourism Hub, in collaboration with the Kansas Czechs, Inc., has been awarded a grant to develop a mural for Wilson, Kansas. The murals will depict Czech immigrants arriving at the train station in Wilson, along with a nod to the history of the horse racing track that was in Wilson at the turn of the century. It was located near the Midland Railroad Hotel, which was built in 1899 and was one of the premier hotels in the Midwest for travelers between Kansas City and Denver. The murals will honor this history as well as showcasing Wilson as the Czech Capital of Kansas.

Kansas banking commissioner pleads for greater oversight of novel financial institution

The top banking regulator in Kansas urged legislators Thursday to embrace bills clearing a path for criminal background checks and fingerprinting of officers, directors and organizers involved in a new type of financial institution catering to wealthy people securing loans with their illiquid assets.

70% of state government jobs pay workers below-market rates

Report triggers bipartisan discussion about broader use of merit raises Seven of 10 categories of Kansas government workers were paid below average market rates based on a new survey examining wages at comparable in-state employers and state government employers in Nebraska, Oklahoma, Missouri and elsewhere. The Kansas Department of Administration’s report identifi ed pay deficiencies of 32% for law clerks, 22% for social worker supervisors, 19% for driver license examiners, 13% for chemists, 9% for senior electricians, 7% for fire investigators, 3% for property appraisers and 1% for technology support consultants.
