70% of state government jobs pay workers below-market rates

Report triggers bipartisan discussion about broader use of merit raises Seven of 10 categories of Kansas government workers were paid below average market rates based on a new survey examining wages at comparable in-state employers and state government employers in Nebraska, Oklahoma, Missouri and elsewhere. The Kansas Department of Administration’s report identifi ed pay deficiencies of 32% for law clerks, 22% for social worker supervisors, 19% for driver license examiners, 13% for chemists, 9% for senior electricians, 7% for fire investigators, 3% for property appraisers and 1% for technology support consultants.

Kansas tax revenue lags revised November projection by more than 5%

The revised Kansas tax revenue projections proved too bullish in November as the state government collected 5.3% less than anticipated during the month. Economists and fiscal analysts increased by more than $750 million the state’s projected revenue for the current fiscal year, reasoning inflation would continue to stimulate expansion in tax collections.

Children in the Kitchen

Cooking with children can be fun and exhausting! However, taking the time and patience to cook with children has many benefits. Just about every developmental domain can be strengthened through having your child help in the kitchen. Skills children learn in the kitchen include math, reading, fine motor, following directions, sequencing, cultures, language, basic chemistry, and nutrition. Cooking is a life skill that they will need when they become adults. That is quite a list! Cooking also stimulates all five senses and that is how children learn! When children help in the kitchen they are more likely to try new foods because they helped to make them. Have your picky eater choose a recipe and make it together.

Is it possible to skip Christmas?

When I saw the topic for this month’s “ONE,”I knew right away which movie I wanted to write about. I’m all about a good Christmas movie, but I’m even more about a hilarious comedy. Our family rule has always been to read a book before watching something in movie-form.That being said, my chosen movie is “Christmas with the Kranks,” based on the John Grisham novel, “Skipping Christmas.”

‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ teaches us how our lives affect others

When asked to write about my favorite Christmas movie, the choice was an easy one. I have been a fan of actor Jimmy Stewart for as long as I can remember. My mom liked him too.
