Ellis High School inducts 17 into National Honors Society

On Tuesday, November 22, 2022, Ellis High School inducted eight juniors and nine seniors into the local chapter of the National Honor Society. Requirements to get into NHS are a 3.5 GPA, leadership in seven organizations within the school or community, accumulation of 40 hours of community service, and a positive character evaluation by teachers. The following students were inducted into the National Honor Society: Makenna Kohl (Sr.), daughter of Jeff & Emily Kohl; Dakota Metzler (Sr.), son of Jim & Becky Metzler; William Crawford (Sr.), son of Bret & Kimberly Andries and the late George Crawford III; Jarret Mader (Sr.), son of Michael & Mindi Mader; Harlie Bittel (Sr.), daughter of Blake Bittel and Kristi Bittel; Mason Younger (Jr.), son of Aaron & Jennifer Younger; Austin Carroll (Jr.), son of Matt & Nicole Carroll; Emily James (Jr.), daughter of Wesley James and Alice Berens; Kaydawn Haag (Jr.), daughter of Ron & Latisha Haag; Hannah Schiel (Sr.), daughter of Jared & Beth Schiel; Myah McCoy (Sr.), daughter of Casey & Melanie McCoy; Emily Eck (Sr.), daughter of Mark & Sarah Eck; Taylor Seibel (Jr.), daughter of Craig & Becky Seibel; Ava Reed (Jr.), daughter of Darin & April Reed; Kylee Pfeifer (Jr.), daughter of Brandon & Chandra Pfeifer; Macy Eberle (Jr.), daughter of Cory & Michele Eberle; Kayla Julian (Sr.), daughter of Ronald & Amanda Julian.

Hays Public Library Hires Youth Public Services Coordinator

The Hays Public Library has hired a new Public Services Coordinator, who will work with youth and families by connecting them with books and resources as well as facilitating library programs. Chianti Madkins, originally from Ashdown Arkansas, has Bachelor of Arts Degrees in political science and philosophy from the University of Arkansas in Little Rock.

Free Teen Leadership Event in Hays December 4 to Feature Peterson Farm Brothers, FHSU’s Kniffin

Ellis County 4-H Council invites Kansas teens to participate in its upcoming “Chat, Don’t Snap” workshop on Sunday, December 4 from 1-5 p.m. at the FHSU Memorial Union. The event will give teens the opportunity to grow their leadership and communication skills through civil discourse.

Award Winning Fair Recipes

The holidays can be a good time to try new recipes. I thought I would use the opportunity to recognize recipes from the 2022 Ellis County Fair that won awards. Esther Neher, a member of the Victoria Vikings 4-H club, won Grand Champion junior foods with her recipe, Layered Reese’s Cake. Mya Neher, a member of the Victoria Vikings 4-H Club, won Reserve Champion junior foods for her entry of a Fresh Orange Cake.

Letters from Home announces the Fox Theatre as the official Kansas stop of 50-States Tour

From January-May 2023, Erinn Dearth and Dan Beckmann will be traveling the entire country performing one show in each of the United States as the singing and dancing sensation called Letters From Home. The Fox Theatre, Hays, is going to be the host for the official Kansas stop of the tour, which will take place on Friday, March 31, 2023 at 7:00 pm.
