Friday night, the Thomas More Prep-Marian marching band lined the field as Homecoming candidates were announced at Lewis Field Stadium. TMP alumni filled the stands as well as the sidelines to watch their students receive recognition as candidates elected by their classmates.
Crisp, fall temperatures may signal a step away from warmer summer weather, but Johnson County horticulture extension agent Dennis Patton says it’s not a time to completely put away summer work. Patton says several fall chores can set up lawns and gardens for success next spring.
It is important to check corn and sorghum fields for stalk rot diseases prior to harvest. The two most common types of stalk rot in grain sorghum and corn are charcoal rot and Fusarium stalk rot. Both diseases are known to survive in crop residue and can survive in the soil for many years. Stalk rots have somewhat similar symptoms so it is useful to be able to tell them apart.

An “endless probation” case is still dragging on in Kansas, with the defendant set to keep paying restitution for the next four decades, if legal reforms don’t address the situation. Edwanda Garrett pleaded guilty in 2009 to making fraudulent content, and again in 2017 for writing bad checks.
Thomas More Prep-Marian senior Rebekah Schroeder has been named a Commended Scholar in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. The announcement was made by official letter to the school on Sep. 19.
Wines and Steins on the Bricks in Downtown Hays is back for the first time in four years this Friday. An evening stroll throughout Downtown Hays will kick off the evening as guests sample wines, microbrews and hors d’oeuvres.
Nelson Krueger, a 1972 graduate of Fort Hays State University, looks forward to attending FHSU Homecoming in just a few short weeks as he says the weekend events evoke warm memories and nostalgia. During the annual celebration, Nelson will be inducted into the university’s Half Century Club for having graduated from FHSU 50 years ago.
