The 70th Anniversary of the Fish-within-a-Fish

Hays KS – It was a sweltering summer day when George F. Sternberg and his crew uncovered the fossil in the Smoky Hill chalk. What laid before them was a well preserved 13-ft fish called Xiphactinus. Upon further inspection, another smaller fish was discovered. Also well preserved, a 6-ft Gillicus was trapped within the belly of the Xiphactinus. Once Sternberg and his crew were able to free the fossil from the chalk, they transported it to the museum which at the time was located on the campus of Fort Hays State University. Turning heartbreak into hits

Saturday night, Lainey Wilson, Kameron Marlowe and Joshua Ray Davis rocked the stage as the 2022 Wild West Festival came to a close. Leading up to his perforance last night, Marlowe went down an exhilarating path to fame that all started with heartbreak.
