WICHITA, Kansas — A Derby school district committee decided not to remove the Bible from libraries or classrooms despite a challenge that the book contains mature themes. The Hill City, Kansas, High School Alumni Scholarship Program (HCHSASP) has announced that this year’s winner of the annual Edna Dean Harrell Family Scholarship is Abby Smith. Abby, a 2021 graduate of Hill City High, was awarded $6,000 to support her continuing education. She received the first $1,500 this fall and will receive an additional $1,500 each of the next three semesters. Under the rules of the Alumni Association, Abby must maintain a 3.0 grade point average to receive the continuing assistance.

The alfalfa weevil, is the major perennial defoliator of early season alfalfa in Kansas. Alfalfa weevils originated in Asia but were probably introduced into the United States from southern Europe. First reported from Utah in 1904, they are now established in all contiguous states. Kansas State University crop entomologist Jeff Whitworth said now is the time for farmers to be checking their field for the alfalfa weevil, which is considered the number one alfalfa pest.
