TOPEKA — Gov. Laura Kelly and legislative leaders unanimously agreed Monday to dedicate $154 million in federal stimulus funding to support economic development with construction of commercial buildings and to improve resources available to low-income students struggling in school.

The Kansas Supreme Court reversed a a Johnson County District Court decision that had found Senate Bill 40, which relates to emergency powers, to be “unenforceable.” Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said the court’s decision brings clarity to the issue. “[Friday’s] decision provides welcome clarity that the district court erred by going out of its way to ask and then answer questions not before it about the constitutionality of SB 40,” Schmidt said.

After 12 years of serving as the Ellis County City Commissioner, Dean Haselhorst was ex[ected to announce his resignation at Monday evening’s scheduled meeting. His resignation came premature, as he and his family have been working to relocate the vo-tech house they successfully bid on.

A series of six K-State Soybean Production Schools will be offered in late January and early February to provide in-depth training targeted for soybean producers and key-stakeholders. The schools will be sponsored by the Kansas Soybean Commission, and conducted by K-State Research & Extension.

North Carolina’s voter rolls are like a refrigerator that needs to be cleared periodically of rotting milk and other items past their expiration date, according to Jason Torchinsky. Torchinsky is a lawyer representing Republican plaintiffs in a lawsuit seeking to force the state to more regularly maintain its voter rolls.
