FHSU introduces cutting-edge Criminalistics Program
A newly launched program at FHSU will help students “hit the ground running” in the critical field of solving crimes. To introduce students to FHSU’s new bachelor’s degree in Criminalistics, the departments of criminal justice, chemistry, biology, and geosciences hosted an open house in September.
The Grove RHID approved
Following a Public Hearing and discussion during the Sept. 12, 2024, Hays City Commission, Ordinance No. 4061 was unanimously adopted, establishing a Reinvestment Housing Incentive District (RHID) for The Grove development directly north of Hays Medical Center and southeast of the intersection of East 27th Street and Canterbury Drive.
City's balanced 2025 Budget provides over $1.1M in Preventive Street Maintenance next year
On Sept. 12, 2024, following a 45-minute Public Hearing and discussion, and approval of Resolution No. 2024-026 to exceed the Revenue Neutral Rate (RNR), Commissions unanimously adopted the published proposed 2025 City Budget which includes over $1.1M in the Special Highway Fund for preventive street maintenance planned for next year.
No mill levy increase for 2025 City Budget
On Sept. 12, 2024, following a 45-minute Public Hearing and discussion, Hays City Commissioners unanimously approved by a roll call vote, as required by statute, Resolution No. 2024-026 to exceed the Revenue Neutral Rate (RNR) of 24.116 with a 2025 City Budget requestion an Ad Valorem Tax of 25 mills.
$300,000 CDBG awarded to City/Chestnut Suites
During the Sept. 17, 2024, Hays Press Briefing, City Management Analyst Jarrod Kuckelman announced that a $300,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) was recently awarded to Chestnut Suites, LLC [Owner/Developer Adam Pray] for the redevelopment of 1108 North Main Street into a new luxury short-term rental Airbnb location.

Reorganization of Commission names Jacobs as Mayor, Ruder as Vice Mayor
The Hays City Commission began their Sept. 12, 2024, with reorganization, unanimously electing Commissioners Sandy Jacobs and Mason Ruder as Mayor and Vice Mayor respectively. The Commission also readopted the City of Hays City Commission Rules of Procedure.
Daniel Gottschalk Wins on Championship Night
Eighty-two race teams checked into the legendary RPM Speedway for championship night racing, Gage Porter, Blaine Walt, Zach Olmstead, Kyle Pfeifer and Daniel Gottschalk taking home feature wins. The 2024 season track championships were awarded to Rileigh Flohrs, Olmstead, Walt, Pfeifer and Gottschalk.
Whispering Gales Addition Approved
During the Sept. 10, 2024, Ellis County Commission meeting, Commissioners unanimously approved the Whispering Gales Addition final plat application and Resolution 2024-12 to establish the creation of the Whispering Gales Addition to Ellis County, Kansas.
