KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Bobby Witt Jr. searched the crowd for his family before his highly anticipated big league debut Thursday, finally spotting them in the sea of Kansas City Royals fans that had bundled up for a blustery opening day.
The Hays High baseball team settled for a doubleheader split in Friday’s home opener at the HHS field, winning 15-3 in five innings over Garden City in the first game then losing 16-10 in the second game.
NICKERSON – The Thomas More Prep-Marian girls’ soccer team took a halftime lead and never relinquished it in Friday’s 2-1 win over Nickerson. TMP (3-2), which won 10-0 at Wichita-Word of Life on Tuesday, had its match on Thursday against Dodge City postponed.
Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby says he is stepping away from that role later this year after a decade on the job. Bowlsby will remain the Big 12’s leader until a new commissioner is appointed. The expectation is that he will then transition into a new interim role with the league. The 70-year-old Bowlsby’s contract with the Big 12 goes into 2025. He has been Big 12 commissioner since 2012. He came to the league after serving as athletic director at Stanford, Iowa and Northern Iowa.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) In a national championship game nobody at Kansas will soon forget, Bill Self went from the Hall of Fame coach who far too often failed on the big stage to the brilliant mastermind of the biggest comeback in NCAA title-game history.
The Thomas More Prep-Marian girls’ soccer team made an early goal stand in Saturday’s match against Wichita-Classical at Cripplegate Field. TMP scored in the 10th minute on a breakaway by freshman Ivana Weisner in the 10th minute.
In an MIAA matchup, the Tigers dropped three contests to the Missouri Southern Lions over the weekend. In game one, zeroes filled the scoreboard for the first four innings.
