OAKLEY – The Thomas More Prep-Marian girls’ basketball team concentrated its defense on stopping Oakley center Liberty Booker, who was averaging 20 points per game. The Monarchs stymied Booker in the paint and TMP was hitting its shots offensively to take a 48-23 win in Mid-Continent League action Tuesday night.
OAKLEY – The Thomas More Prep-Marian boys’ basketball team lost several key players off last year’s squad which made it to the semifinals of the Class 3A state tournament. Monarch coach Bill Meagher had players with little or no varsity experience get playing time at the start of this season.
MANHATTAN — Bruce Weber admitted just a few games into the season that Markquis Nowell probably deserved to start. He has been Kansas State’s secondleading scorer behind fellow point guard Nijel Pack almost from the get-go, but Weber liked the spark Nowell provided off the bench.
Kansas State do-it-all running back Deuce Vaughn was rewarded for his versatility on Monday with selection to the Associated Press All-America first team. Vaughn, a 5-foot-6, 172-pound sophomore from Round Rock, Texas, was chosen as an all-purpose player, based on his accomplishments both as a runner and receiver.
