The Monarch girls moved to 1-1 in Mid-Continent League competition following a Tuesday evening loss to the Hoxie Indians 49-24. Thomas More Prep-Marian got out in front early on, 6-2 led by seniors Shalee Gottschalk and Brooke Koenigsman, but saw the Indians quickly bounce back with an 11-8 lead after one quarter.
Friday night, the Hays High Indians competed in a home match up against 6A Junction City, the girls team maintaining their perfect record, while the boys dropped their second match of the season.
Hays High has proven they are the team to beat this season as the defending Western Athletic Conference champions, now 5-0 after winning the Hays City Shootout for the first time in two decades. Though the Indians have seen standout performances from freshman Jenna Schmeidler and senior Molly Martin, opponents can expect a versatile lineup to take the court this season.
Natalee North logged a whopping 33 points in Friday night's Ellis Railer victory over Wheatland Ridge, 53-45. The senior went 11-for-17 from the field, a career high, to help the Railers improve to 3-1 on the season.
