Women Who Lead awards 8 $1,000 scholarships to Ellis County women

Women Who Lead is pleased to announce the award of eight $1,000 scholarships to Ellis County women.The scholarship winners were required to be current Ellis County residents and be attending Fort Hays State University, Fort Hays Tech North Central or the Hays Academy of Hair Design in fall 2025. The scholarship fund is supported through donations and sales of the raffle tickets during the Women Who Lead 31 Days of Cash raffle.

Bond Construction Project now estimated slightly under $163M

Nabholz Construction’s Senior Project Superintendent Brett Stevens and Project Manager Dylan Weddle appeared before the USD489 Board of Education (BOE) on May 12, 2025 to present a Bond Construction update for O’Loughlin and Hays High Schools as well as a Financial Update for both projects and noting that with BOE approval of one Bond Project Change Order, PCC04, for $59,449, the Bond Construction Project now is slightly under $163M vs. slightly over as presented during their Dec.

USD489 BOE gets preview of renovation plans to transform current HHS into Middle School

On May 12, 2025, DLR Group’s Lead Architect Ishita Banerjii and USD489 Building and Grounds Director Rusty Lindsay presented the Board of Education (BOE) with both Bond Construction Project designs and District Capital Outlay Project plans to renovate the current Hays High School (HHS) into the new Hays Middle School (HMS). Nabholz Senior Project Superintendent Brett Stevens also presented an overall Bond Construction Budget Program Budget Summary which includes a nearly $6.5M budget for the HMS renovation, with an estimated cost of $458,332 for Architectural & Engineering design by DLR.

With HYS fate at stake, City Commissioners urge residents to contact legislators

Near the end of the May 22, 2025, Hays City Commission Regular meeting, all Commissioners urged anyone who can to contact their legislators regarding the 52% cut in funding cut to the Essential Air Services (EAS) Program, in the proposed Federal 2026 Budget which the U.S. House of Representative recently passed by a small margin.

City greenlights Runway 4-22 & Taxiway M reconstruction, contingent on FAA funding

Hays City Commissioners have unanimously accepted a nearly $6.7M bid from Smoky Hill, LLC to reconstruct Runway 4-22 and Taxiway M at the intersection of Runway 4-22 at the Hays Regional Airport (HYS), contingent upon the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarding grant funding through two programs resulting in the City’s share of construction services equaling only $336,944. Commissioners also unanimously approved a $445,8000 Construction Engineering Services Agreement for the project, also contingent upon the FAA awarding grant funding through two programs resulting in the City’s share of engineering services equaling only $22,290.
