On Saturday, a selection committee assembled by Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., will gather at Fort Hays State University to interview candidates from Kansas’ First District who are seeking nominations to the U.S. military, naval, Air Force, and Merchant Marine academies.
John Pyle, Hays, will serve as a member of this year’s committee.
Pyle is Navy veteran, having served in Vietnam. He is the vice president of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter No. 939 in Hays and is employed by the Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs. Pyle has initiated a new outreach program calling on incarcerated veterans at Norton, Ellsworth and Larned correctional facilities. He graduated from Fort Hays State University and is the vice chairman of the Ellis County Republican Party. He and his wife, Becky, have been married 45 years have two sons and four grandchildren.
Each year, members of Congress have the opportunity to nominate outstanding young men and women between the ages of 18 and 23 from Kansas’ First District to apply for a limited number of positions at four of the nation's five military service academies.
The interviews will take place Saturday at Fort Hays State University’s Memorial Union. Pyle is one of eight committee members and the lone representative from northwest Kansas.
