Shirley S. Kane, 89, Hays, died Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at Good Samaritan Society of Hays Care Center.

She was born Sept. 9, 1926, in New Haven, Conn., to Earnest John and Beatrice (Gorman) Steeves. She received her bachelor of art degree in 1948, from Marymount College in Tarrytown, N.Y.

She married William M. Kane on Aug. 26, 1950, in Fairfield, Conn. She was a social worker/ homemaker and lived in Hays since 1961.

She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays Public Library Board, on which she served as chairperson, Hays Symphony Guild, in which she served as president, St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary, in which she served as president. She was a volunteer at the Hays Public Library bookstore, Good Samaritan Society of Hays and a docent at Sternberg Museum.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. William M. Kane, of the home; three sons, William Kane and wife, Deb, Grand Junction, Colo., Dan Kane and wife, Linda, Clay Center, and John Kane, Denver; three daughters, Claire Loughry and husband, John, Centennial, Colo., Mary Kate Pickering and husband, Don, Bel Air, M.D., and Susan Kane and wife, Lanka Elson, Woodland Park, Colo.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant sister.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays; inurnment in Kansas Veterans Cemetery, WaKeeney.

Family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays Public Library or Hays Symphony Guild, in care of the mortuary.
