Martin Schumm, 105, Ellis, died Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Trego County-Lemke Long-Term Care Center, WaKeeney.

He was born Jan, 30, 1909, in Illischestie, Bukovina, Austria, to Andrew and Barbara (Bachmeier) Schum.

He married Caroline Schaus on Feb. 4, 1938, in Tulsa, Okla. She preceded him in death May 14, 2014.

He worked in the oilfields in Oklahoma and Kansas as a rough-neck in wildcat drilling from the 1930s through 1960s. He was a school custodian at Washington Grade School after the new junior high was added, and he helped Ray Eaton in his plumbing business.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church since 1946.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly McLaury, Ellis, and Aleta "Lea" McCloud, Wichita; seven grandchildren, Kirk Kutina and wife, Pam, Laurie Bishop and husband, Tom, Cindi Renyer, Todd McLaury and wife, Lisa, Monica Fisher and husband, Darin, Darrin McCloud and wife, Kari, Andrea Johnson and husband, Chris; 19 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws; his siblings, John, Bertha Brack and husband, Isaac, Kathryn "Katie" Coleman and husband, Earl, Ella Massier and husband, Frank, and Minnie Brown and husband, Vince; and a grandson, Clay Kutina.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 E. 17th, Ellis, KS 67637; burial in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Christ Lutheran Church in care of the funeral home.
