John “Jack” Steiger, 78, died Friday, May 26, 2017, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 10, 1939, southwest of Menlo. He was raised by his grandparents, John and Viola Steiger. He graduated from Menlo Consolidated High School and attained his bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State University.

He married Leoma Duffey. He had a passion for teaching, coaching and officiating high school sports for nearly 50 years.

Due to the length of his teaching career, he often taught children of former students.

He was also a part-time farmer and attached to the land which was homesteaded in the 1800s by his great grandfather, Jacob Steiger.

He was a member of the Oakley Christian Church.

Survivors include his sons, John Steiger and wife, Becky, Abilene, and J.J. Steiger and wife, Dana, Menlo; two daughters, Vicki Nickols and husband, Tom, Colby, and Terri Lupo and husband, Doug, Black Hawk, Colo.; his soulmate, Leoma Steiger, Oakley; four grandchildren ;and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sherri on Jan. 7, 2000; and great-granddaughter, Addison Nickols on June 12, 2008.

A gathering to celebrate his life will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley; graveside inurnment service will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Menlo Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to science department at Oakley High School in care of the mortuary.
