Prosecutors have charged a Hutchinson prison inmate with sexually assaulting a contract worker at the prison last summer.

The state charged Steven Stumpner, 28, with rape or an alternate count of aggravated sexual battery for the incident that occurred July 17 at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility Central Unit, said Reno County Deputy District Attorney Tom Stanton.

Stanton declined to provide additional details, other than that the assault was done digitally to the female employee, without her consent.

Stumpner appeared Thursday before Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen, who placed the case on the 2 p.m. Jan. 7 waiver-status docket.

Stumpner was returned to the prison, where he's serving time for two counts each of aggravated robbery and theft out of Johnson County, and a conviction of battery of a correction's officer in Pawnee County.

No information was immediately available on whether the prison made any changes as a result of the alleged assault.
