STAFFORD - Mary Jo Taylor, superintendent of the Stafford school district, filed Monday to run for the State Senate District seat held by Sen. Mitch Holmes, R-St. John.
Taylor, 63, also is a Republican. The primary election is Aug. 2.
There wouldn't be a need to run, Taylor said, if she agreed with Holmes' positions on issues. She expressed concern about public school funding and also concern about the stature of teaching today.
Holmes scored an upset victory in August 2012, when he defeated Sen. Ruth Teichman, R-Stafford, in the GOP primary. Holmes had served in the Kansas House of Representatives sinc3 2005.
Holmes, a small business owner, is chairman of the Senate Ethics and Elections Committee.
