Thursday was the first night of RPM Speedway's Fall Nationals IX in Hays.

While the opening night settled the winners of the sport compact and cruiser divisions, four more classes will compete for large cash prizes Friday and Saturday.

Races begin at 7 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday.

On Friday night, IMCA-sanctioned hobby stocks, Northern sport mods, stocks and modifieds will compete for automatic spots in Saturday night's feature races.

On Saturday, modifieds will be competing for $5,000 to win, while stocks will be battling for $3,000 to win. Sport mods ($2,000) and hobby stocks ($1,500) also will be fighting for elevated payouts. Last-chance qualifiers will take place in each class before the features are contested.

Several drivers in all four classes took to the track Thursday night for a test-and-tune session. Drivers were arriving from as far away as Texas, North Dakota and Iowa.

Last year's Fall Nationals was rained out all three days.
