Hays Medical Center's Center for Health Improvement will host its annual Senior Health and Fitness Day on May 28.The event is in conjunction with the National Senior Health and Fitness Day conducted in more than 1,500 locations across the United States. The theme for this year's event is "Fitness ... A Lifetime Investment." The program begins with registration at 8:30 a.m. and the events run from 9 a.m. through 1 p.m. There is no charge for registration.

Organized as a public/private good health partnership by the Mature Market Resource Center, Senior Health and Fitness Day will offer fitness activities for older adults including hospitals, parks and recreation departments, senior centers, health clubs, retirement communities, houses of worship, health departments and other community locations. The event is always on the last Wednesday in May as part of Older Americans Month activities.

The program at The Center for Health Improvement will cover a wide range of health related topics including balance and your bones, what you need to know about your medications, senior Zumba, diabetic tips, exercises for your back and abs, and legally healthy and fit.

"Individuals at all levels of physical fitness are encouraged to participate," said Steph Schaffer, wellness specialist at the Center for Health Improvement. "Our goal is to make exercise fun, to increase awareness of the benefits of a regular exercise program for older adults, and to encourage all older adults to take advantage of the many health and fitness programs offered in their communities."
